Information for students

Help and assistance available to you:

Access and support

To help us provide you with the best possible support on your course, please speak to your nearest educational guidance adviser about any support you would like. If you have any individual issues or learning needs that may arise outside the classroom, such as the use of our facilities or taking part in outside visits, please discuss this with us.

Disability Discrimination Act

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) defines disability as a substantial physical or mental impairment that has an adverse and long-term effect on a person's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. This definition may not cover some people who have difficulties with learning and need extra support. If you are not covered under the DDA we will still try to support your needs.

Confidentiality

We always ask for your permission to pass on any information you provide about a disability, or additional support need. We will then only pass that information on to the staff who need to know in order to put special arrangements in place, always with your involvement and agreement.

If you do not wish this information to be passed on, please inform a member of staff. This could mean that we may be limited in any special arrangements we can make. If there are Health and Safety issues involved, we will discuss this with you at the time.

All records are kept secure and confidential, in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

Access to our centres

The reception areas of our main centres are fully accessible, with level access, lifts or ramps. All reception counters are fitted with hearing loops. Some centres have lifts, accessible toilets and special parking.

If there is a difficulty in accessing your class, we will do our best to move it to an accessible room and discuss any options with you. If you are attending a class in a community location, please ensure that we are aware of your requirements at the time of enrolment.

Specialist equipment

If you need special equipment such as a hearing loop, large print notes or audio versions of materials, please speak to us as soon as you can so that we can do our best to make the adjustments you request.

Special arrangements can be organised in advance for examinations e.g. large print versions of the exam paper, additional time, adapted equipment or an amanuensis to write for you. Please speak to your tutor at the start of your course.
