Helping the baby's mum prepare for labour
If you will be at the birth of your child, it can help to know what the baby's mum wants during labour, especially if she is anxious about it. It's a good idea to learn about childbirth and discuss her preferences. It will help you both feel more confident and supported.
Antenatal classes
Antenatal classes are a great way to learn what to expect. They also help you plan your role as a birth partner. These sessions can help you feel more confident and prepared for the big day.
Take a free online antenatal course. It can answer many questions. Visit the In Our Place website and sign up for understanding pregnancy, labour, birth and your baby. Use the access code Invicta to register for your free account.
Birthing plan
A birthing plan can help you both understand each other’s needs and preferences during labour. It might include details such as who plans to attend the birth, options around pain medication, and how the baby’s mum would prefer to give birth.
Talking about the birth plan can help you understand the baby's mum. It will show how she wants to feel during labour and how to support this. For example, you could discuss how, during the birth, you will support her to make decisions. Would she like your help with any options being offered? What might you both need if plans change?
Prepare yourself for labour
Here are some ideas on how to prepare yourself and support the baby’s mum during labour.
- Pack yourself an overnight bag including toiletries, change of clothes, mobile phone and charger, and swimwear (if your partner hopes to labour in a birthing pool you can join them).
- Put some loose change in the car for car parking or items from vending machines.
- Take some healthy snacks and drinks.
- Keep your mobile phone charged.
- Take your own pillow to help you grab some sleep when you can.
- Know and practise the journey to hospital, whether by car, bus or taxi.
- If travelling by car, check that the car is safe and has petrol. Check that your baby’s car seat is fitted safely, a car seat retailer can often help with this.
- Get a list of contacts together so you can share the exciting news when the baby arrives.
