Junior colleges
Since 2013, the government has allowed students aged 14+ to leave school and enrol on full time courses at further education providers such as junior colleges.
Junior college is available to those who feel that learning academic subjects in a secondary school environment is not for them, and they would prefer to be taught in a college.
A junior college allows students to study academic and vocational studies at the same time. Examples of vocational studies are:
- art
- catering
- computing
- early years and health and social care
- hair and beauty
- media and photography
- motoring
- music.
Once students have completed their vocational and academic courses they can progress into higher education, apprenticeship or work.
