A break from caring
We understand being a carer can be physically and emotionally challenging. It is so important you have the opportunity to take a break when you can.
There are lots of ways to take a 'short break' from caring. Whether it's for a few hours, overnight, a weekend or longer. There are different kinds of short breaks available, depending on the sort of needs the person you're caring for has.
Don't worry, whilst you take time for yourself, the person you care for will enjoy new activities in a supportive, safe environment.
As a carer, you may be looking for financial support to look after your child or young person. Learn which benefits and discounts you may be entitled to.
Caring for 0 to 18 year olds
Short breaks provide fun and positive activities for disabled children and young people (0 to 18) to take part in. They help:
- to develop independence
- their physical and emotional health
- increase their readiness in becoming an adult
- reduce loneliness.
Whilst short breaks help parents and carers to take a break from their caring responsibilities, and spend time with other family members.
Kent Young Carers provide carers aged 5 to 18 with information, advice, support and social activities.
Following an assessment, they offer a range of short-term interventions including signposting, one-to-one support, in school support and workshops.
Respite care allows you to take a break from caring, while your child or young person you care for is looked after by someone else.
