Cheriton Road cycle route

We are planning to install walking and cycling improvements between Cheriton High Street to Cheriton Road. The project aims to make it safer to walk, wheel and cycle by creating improvements suitable for a range of users.

Following on from the Cheriton to Folkestone cycling consultation, we have adapted the design to represent some of the views of the local community.

We will be providing a cycle lane on both sides of the road between Cherry Garden Avenue and Radnor Park. This will include changes to the junction layouts at Cornwallis Avenue, Julian Road and Radnor Park West and a straight over pedestrian crossing outside Morrisons.

During a review with Active Travel England, it was agreed that a formal crossing outside the Harvey Grammar School would be beneficial for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists and greater segregation between cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles was needed. The scheme was therefore redesigned to include a new toucan crossing outside the school instead of the two small island crossing points, and the construction of wider footways to accommodate greater segregation for cyclists between the Harvey Grammar School and Morrisons supermarket.

As part of the Active Travel Fund, a scheme which helps councils to improve walking, wheeling and cycling facilities, we received a budget for the scheme of approximately £1,200,000. This fund cannot be used for existing highway maintenance issues.

We also hope to encourage more users to travel more actively for those shorter journeys such as to the shops, local schools and the local railway stations. This is often referred to as the Active Last Mile and links to many benefits which contribute to improving public health and meeting climate targets through sustainable transport.

The work will take around 20 weeks to complete, starting on 15 April 2024 between the hours of 7am and 6pm.

The works will be begin using signing, coning and guarding to provide a safe area for the construction works to take place while still maintaining two-way traffic flow.

The following roads will need to be closed to assist with the construction process, with very short local diversion routes put in place for all road users.

Phase Road name Traffic management Temporary work date(s)
1 Radnor Park West Road closure (diversion in place) 15 April (2 weeks)
2 Julian Road Road closure (diversion in place) 29 April (2 weeks)
3 Cornwallis Avenue Road closure (diversion in place) 13 May (2 weeks)
4 Cheriton Road (Radnor Park Road to Cherry Garden Avenue) Pedestrian barriers and cones 30 May to November (14 weeks)

The Cherry Garden crossroads traffic signals are now being looking at independently from this scheme by our Crash Remedial Team.
