Pencester Road

The Pencester Bus priority scheme is part of Kent's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). Funded by the government, it was chosen for its ability to improve:

  • the Dover Fastrack bus service
  • the link to existing bus services in Pencester Road
  • current bus services in Dover while establishing a new link to the Port of Dover.

We hope to improve the bus network and encourage more people to use buses, helping to make services more sustainable in the future.

The scheme will include the following changes:

  • Realign the kerbs and pavements at the Worthington Street and Biggin Street junction. This will allow buses to cross into Pencester Road.
  • Install traffic lights at the Worthington Street, Biggin Street and Pencester Road junction. The existing controlled crossing on Pencester Road will stay.
  • Realign kerbs and pavements at the southern end of Pencester Road. This will allow a two-way vehicle passage. We will reduce the existing pavement and install a central island to separate the lanes.
  • Install a contraflow bus and cycle lane along the western side of Pencester Road, between Biggin Street and Maison Dieu Road. All existing parking will be removed from this side of the road.
  • Reduce the existing pavement width. This will allow for an uninterrupted bus lane between the parking area entrance behind the shops and the front of Dover Technical College.
  • Install traffic lights at the Pencester Road and Maison Dieu junction. We will also realign the kerbs and footpaths on both sides of Pencester Road to allow buses to pass through. The existing controlled pedestrian crossing on A256 Maison Dieu Road will stay.
  • Install pedestrian crossing on Pencester Road.
  • Keep the existing southbound bus stops and bus stands. We will put in place two bus stops on the western side of Pencester Road.

Scheme cost

We received £18.9 million from the Department of Transport (DfT) as part of the National Bus Strategy funding. The funding will help us to carry out minor highway improvements. Learn more about the BSIP.

The estimated cost of the scheme is up to £900,000.
