Yellow lines
A waiting restriction is any marking on the road that tells a driver that they cannot park there freely.
Yellow lines control where and when people can park.
On road parking can:
- reduce visibility making a road unsafe for drivers and pedestrians, especially near junctions and crossings
- mean narrower roads, causing traffic jams and delays, especially during peak traffic hours.
GOV.UK provide information on waiting and parking in the Highway Code.
Contact your district council to find where disabled parking spaces are or to apply for a disabled parking bay outside your house.
Types of yellow lines
There are two types of yellow lines.
- A single yellow line means that parking is allowed, but is restricted. Normally, parking is allowed between certain times. Signs on the road show the times parking is restricted.
- A double yellow line means that parking is not allowed at any time.
Apply for a new waiting restriction
If parking is causing a safety problem on your road and you believe yellow lines should be introduced, explore how to request a change.
If your application is approved, a legal traffic regulation order will be put in place.
The work can take up to 18 months to complete. Objections can come from professional organisations and the general public. This may increase the timescales.

Vehicle parked on yellow lines
If a vehicle is causing an obstruction and is parked behind some yellow lines on the road, your district council enforcement team can issue a penalty charge notice.
