Fall prevention courses
Falls are a major health issue, particularly among adults aged 65 or older, or anyone with an impairment which affects balance and stability.
Working with Kent Community Health Trust and Involve Kent we offer fall prevention classes to people who are at risk of, or have a history of, falling.
Types of classes
Postural stability
We fund postural stability exercise classes for people who find that their balance is beginning to worsen. These classes are suitable for those with a personal or family history of osteoporosis.
Classes last for up to 36 weeks and involve chair-based exercises designed to:
- improve balance and mobility
- increase stamina
- raise confidence
- strengthen everyday movement muscles.
Advanced fall prevention
For people with urgent need, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) provide advanced falls prevention services for more specific intervention. Advanced falls prevention services can include:
- group rehabilitation
- home adaptation and equipment provision
- multifactorial fall risk assessment
- osteoporosis screenings
- physiotherapy assessment including balance and musculoskeletal assessment
- vestibular screening.
Apply
When applying for fall prevention classes, some basic mobility questions will be asked which allow us to determine which course is required.
You can be referred for fall prevention classes by a GP, the emergency services, or you can self-refer if you are able to:
- walk 50 yards unaided
- stand for 2 minutes with or without aids
- undertake basic exercise.

Have your say on proposed changes for the postural stability service
There are a number of changes that are being proposed so the service can be used by more people, more locally and earlier in life. Find out more about these changes and tell us your views on our consultation page.
The consultation closes on 17 December 2024.
