A disability related expense (DRE) is an extra cost that you may have to pay due to your disability or care needs.
It is a cost you pay which is above what a person without your disability would expect to pay. A disability related expense which is unique to you.
When we work out how much you can afford to pay towards your care and support in your own home or in the community we allow £17 per week for any disability related expenses. We call it a standard disability related expenditure allowance.
Eligibility
You can only claim for a DRE allowance if:
- it is for non-residential care
- you have been assessed to contribute towards the cost of your care
- if you think you're disability-related expenses are higher than £17 a week
- you get disability benefits. Such as:
- Attendance Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance Care Component (middle or higher rates only)
- Personal Independence Payment Care Component (standard or enhanced rates only)
- Constant Attendance Allowance
- Exceptionally Severe Disablement Allowance.
Not eligible
If you pay for your own care and support yourself, you will not get a DRE allowance. As you have been assessed to pay the full cost of the care you receive.
