Workplace health checks

We are excited to announce the start of a county-wide workplace health check initiative.

We successfully applied for a £195,000 government grant to locally roll out a national scheme that will take cardiovascular (CVD) checks directly to employees most at risk. With our providers, Randox, we aim to provide 3,800 free health checks within workplaces by March 2025.

What to expect

These health checks include two formats:

  • Full NHS health checks (including assessments such as blood pressure, height, weight and cholesterol)
  • CVD Checks (not including cholesterol testing).

These checks will provide the individual with an indication of their cardiovascular health status and provide an opportunity to consider lifestyle changes that can improve their health and reduce the risk of diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Relevant referrals and signposting will be offered to services such as local quit smoking centres.

How would the process work?

Once a date has been agreed, Randox will provide a link for all employees aged 25 to 84 years old to book an appointment time. On the day, they will ask for access to a private space or room within your workplace that includes a table and chairs.

The provider will bring all the equipment that is required for the health checks.

A health check can take between 20 to 30 minutes. Results will be given to the employee and, with their consent, they will be signposted or referred to any relevant local services such as those to aid quitting smoking.

Do these replace the need for NHS Health Checks?

Individuals receiving cardiovascular health checks will still be eligible to access their 5 yearly NHS health checks. However, if you have a full health check at your workplace, this would be the same process as the NHS health check and therefore you would not need to have another for 5 years.

Who are our providers?

This pilot is offered by Randox, established in 1982, they are the largest healthcare diagnostics company in the UK. Their goal is to provide individuals with access to unrivalled health data that empowers them to take control of their health and make positive changes to help prevent future illness.

Why sign up?

This is an exciting and free opportunity for workplaces to champion their employees’ wellbeing and ensure their health is noted as a priority.

“CVD accounted for almost 1 in 4 deaths in England across all ages in 2022 and each year in Kent it claims around 1000 lives of people under the age of 75, yet 4 out of 5 cases are preventable.”

Dr Anjan Ghosh, Kent County Council Director of Public Health
