A member of our highways teams explain how we manage grass maintenance on high speed roads.

Team member: "This evening we're cutting the vegetation on a high speed road network.

The works on the network are carried out at night mainly to minimise disruption to the public, but there's less traffic as well which makes it a safer working environment for our operatives.

The works carried out this evening include grass cutting, strimming, blowing the cuttings back off the carriageway onto the verge, there'll be litter picking, as well as hedge cutting and sign clearance. Other services that take advantage of the road closure also include drainage and street lighting.

There'll be barrier repairs going on and we only have the opportunity to carry out one visit per year, so it's important for the whole project to be coordinated and for us all to convene on the same road at the same time.

A lot of coordination goes into communications with the districts, as they're responsible for the litter picking.

All stakeholders and partners are well informed of the visits prior to the program kicking in and taking place.

So whenever you're approaching the street works, obviously there's a lot of people within that closure working.

They've just got a row of cones to protect them from the live traffic.

Be aware of what's going on around you, keep your distance from the car in front of you and obviously reduce your speed.

You are approaching a work area at the end of the day, so you have to bear that in mind.

Obviously drivers want to get to where they're going, but at the same time our operatives want to get home to their families as well."
